The last time Jessie Kummer saw his buddy Brian Nadeau, he recalls his lifelong pal was pretty drunk.
Nadeau called him from a motel in Fort Assiniboine, 156 km northwest of Edmonton, back in November. Kummer was slated to go moose hunting with the 44-year-old Nadeau and Nadeau's buddy, Dave Pusher.
"They were already drinking," said Kummer, who added he and another friend met Nadeau and Pusher at the baseball diamonds in town.
After a night of drinking from a flat of Clear Creek beer, the four men drove around town. Twice they put cars in the ditch, Kummer recalled. After a while, Kummer said, he and his friend lost contact with the vehicle Nadeau and Pusher were driving.
"They were super drunk," said Kummer.
Would-be hunters Nadeau and Pusher haven't been seen since.
"It's really strange for him (Nadeau) to disappear," said Kummer.
Now Barrhead Mounties have called in the Major Crimes section of RCMP K Division to investigate. "We have to look at it as suspicious," said Const. Steve May. "We have to assume that something suspicious happened."
In April, Mounties dragged the Athabasca River twice.
"We came up dry," said May.
Mounties called out Edmonton, Barrhead and Westlock search-and-rescue teams, while a police dog and two private search dogs combed the shores, he said.
In March, reports surfaced Pusher had been seen in northeast Edmonton.
"We have followed up those calls with no results," May said.
Nadeau's family continues to fear the worst.
"He's never gone missing before," said Marlene Knorr, Nadeau's younger sister.
"We pray a lot and we light a candle every night."
Anyone with information is asked to call Barrhead RCMP at (780) 674-2696.
