A grimy, cherub-faced toddler, wearing a dingy white T-shirt with orange trim, dirty blue overalls and fire-engine sneakers, made his way down the concrete steps of the church looking for somebody. Anybody. He was alone.
The blond-haired little boy, believed to be almost 2 years old, was found by a janitor in an outside stairwell at Parkland First Baptist Church around 5:15 p.m. Monday.
“He was slightly sunburned and a little dirty, but other than that, it looks like he was taken care of before this. He had some water and a cheeseburger with him,” said Ed Troyer, Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesman.
The boy’s description, just under 3 feet tall with closely trimmed blond hair and blue eyes, doesn’t fit any of the missing-children reports filed in the area, Troyer said.
Police are now having the child’s description compared with state and national missing-children’s databases.
He apparently hasn’t learned to talk yet, Troyer said.
The little boy was getting settled in with a foster care family Tuesday as police continued to try to find out who he is and where he came from.
“There has been no shortage of people offering to take care of him, including emergency service, media and even law enforcement officers,” Troyer said.
Police are investigating multiple scenarios that might have led to the boy being left alone.
“He may have been abandoned, but he may also have walked away from an incapacitated parent or grandparent that may also be in need of help. We don’t know yet,” Troyer said.
Do you know him?
