OTTAWA -- Rush-hour traffic on a major Ottawa freeway was shut down for more than three hours yesterday morning after police acted on a tip that a suspended driver, heading to court for sentencing, was carrying explosives. Police searched the Ottawa courthouse, but nothing was found and proceedings resumed.
The driver was on his way to court, where he was due to be sentenced on weapons and fraud charges in a high-profile case dating to 2002. Police shut down the freeway in both directions and called in the Ottawa police bomb disposal unit. No explosives were found.
Brian McGillivray, 35, and his passenger were arrested.

OTTAWA -- A man accused of murdering his mother, father and sister will spend at least another 30 days at the Royal Ottawa Hospital while he is assessed to determine whether he can be held criminally responsible for his alleged actions.
Daniel Maxheleau, 30, has been at the hospital since shortly after his arrest in March.
Maxheleau is living in the facility's secure wing and is taking treatment for mental health problems.
Maxheleau's psychiatric condition is being examined to help determine if he was so mentally ill at the time of his alleged actions that he couldn't appreciate right and wrong or the gravity of his actions.
Maxheleau has been in custody since he was arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder.
He was arrested at the house he shared with his father, Gerald Maxheleau, 66, his mother, Louise Maxheleau, 60, and his sister, Michelle Maxheleau, 25, who were found stabbed to death on March 13.
One doctor's report on his assessment has been presented in court, but its findings, as well as other evidence presented, are covered by a standard publication ban.
Another doctor is doing the current assessment.

OTTAWA -- A Gatineau, Que., man accused of plunging a kitchen knife into the throat of a police officer before stealing his cruiser and leading police on a wild high-speed chase has been charged with attempted murder.
Police arrested 20-year-old Sebastien Charette moments after the driver of a stolen police car smashed through a Gatineau police roadblock just after midnight yesterday.
The arrest came about 15 minutes after veteran Gatineau police officer Richard Rochon was stabbed in the throat by a man being taken to hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
"(The knife) was very short but very sharp," said Gatineau police Lieut. Jean-Francois Beauchamp, adding Rochon has been released from hospital.
"He was very lucky."
Beauchamp said the injured officer and his partner were transporting a "paranoid" man to the Buckingham hospital when the stabbing occurred about 11:45 p.m.
As Rochon attempted to pull the cruiser over, Beauchamp said his partner doused the suspect with pepper spray, causing him to drop the knife.
Believing the suspect was secure in the back seat of the cruiser, the second officer then left the police car to tend to the injured Rochon.
Beauchamp said the suspect was somehow able to slip through the small window between the front and rear seats of the cruiser and steal the car.
Beauchamp said the suspect wasn't handcuffed since he voluntarily offered to go to the hospital and wasn't under arrest. It's not known if the officers searched him prior to putting him into the back seat of the cruiser.
With lights flashing and siren blaring, the vehicle then turned onto a local highway and raced westbound in the eastbound lanes as police officers scrambled to warn oncoming motorists.
The pursuit ended when the car slammed into two other police cars, lost a wheel and crashed into a concrete median.
Charette faces nine charges, including attempted murder of a police officer.
He appeared in Gatineau court yesterday and was remanded in custody for a psychiatric assessment.
