ATLANTA -- A homicide suspect who spent 56 hours perched on an 18-storey construction crane was in custody early today after police climbed the structure and arrested him, authorities said.
"Apparently, he was thirsty," said Atlanta police Sgt. John Quigley.
The man, identified as Carl Edward Roland, got onto the crane around 5 p.m. Wednesday and told police he was thinking of killing himself by jumping, Quigley said.
Roland is wanted by the Pinellas County, Florida, Sheriff's department in the death of ex-girlfriend Jennifer L. Gonzalez, 36, whose body was found Tuesday.
An arrest warrant affidavit accuses Roland of strangling Gonzalez and dumping her body in a pond behind the apartment complex where she lived.
Authorities had said Thursday that Roland had talked to negotiators but refused food and water.
The standoff had unfolded high above Atlanta's busy Buckhead neighbourhood, an area filled with clubs and restaurants.
Lunch and dinner crowds packed restaurant patios with clear views of the standoff.

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- A man fatally shot his wife in her intensive care hospital room and then killed himself Monday morning, authorities said.
The shooting took place around 6:15 a.m. at St. Joseph's Hospital, said Victor Azar, operations manager for Fulton County Emergency Services. The shootings were confined to one room and no other injuries were reported, police said.
The woman, who had suffered from a heart-related illness, was believed to be in her 70s, said Cpl. Gary Syblis, a spokesman for the Fulton County Police Department.
Syblis did not say what sort of treatment the woman had undergone, but said the shooting happened in the intensive care unit and that the woman's recovery from her illness was not going well.
He declined to release the victims' names or provide any information about the shooter. He also declined to say how the man got a gun into his wife's hospital room.

LUMPKIN, Georgia (AP) -- The police chief, a county deputy and a paramedic were shot in this small town's courthouse square Thursday and the suspected gunman was killed during an ensuing gunbattle, authorities said.
The police chief in a nearby town also was wounded during the pursuit of the suspect.
The most seriously injured was the paramedic, who was shot in the leg after arriving at the scene to help the wounded officers, said John Bankhead, a spokesman for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The officers' injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Two people were taken into custody, but a third who fired at officers with a semi-automatic pistol was shot and killed by police, Bankhead said.
The gunfire began about 2 a.m. outside the Stewart County Courthouse in Lumpkin, 115 miles southwest of Atlanta, when officers responded to a report of shots fired.
Lumpkin Police Chief Jay Stripling and Stewart County Deputy Clinton Rivers were both shot in the face by a man firing from the courthouse steps, Bankhead said.
The suspect then fled the scene.
A few hours later, after a massive police dragnet, officers confronted three suspects a few blocks from the courthouse. One of the men, identified as Marcus Dwayne Dalton, 26, fired at officers with a 9mm pistol, striking Plains Police Chief Henry Brown.
Officers returned fire and killed Dalton, Bankhead said. The other two men with Dalton were taken in for questioning.
During the second shootout, a deputy was struck in his gun belt by a bullet, but was not injured.
The injured paramedic underwent surgery and his condition was not immediately known, said Michelle Slaughter, Stewart County Sheriff's dispatcher.
