KAHULUI, Maui, Hawaii -- Maui residents are shocked after reports of two senior citizens raped within two weeks in the same neighborhood.
A 78-year-old woman on her morning walk Tuesday was attacked and raped near the corner of Wakea and Hina avenues in Kahului, police said.
Two weeks earlier, police say a man broke into the home of an 87-year-old in the same area, raped her and burglarized her home.
The crime scenes are near Hale Mahaolu, a senior citizen community with nearly 300 units. Women who live there are taking extra safety precautions.
"It's sad. It's really sad. Something has to be done," Hale Mahaolu resident Emily Morreira said.
"Now, I take my whistle," Hale Mahaolu resident Mitzi Horswall said.
Residents say they always lock their doors, but now they're careful to walk in groups, avoiding the early morning and evening hours.
"I went to the laundry a little later because I didn't want to go early. At that time, people are around there," Hale Mahaolu resident Catherine Antone said.
Police are not ruling out the possibility of a serial rapist. So far, police have not released a description or sketch of the culprit or culprits.

HONOLULU -- The Honolulu Police Department found an infant and the pickup truck that was stolen Wednesday afternoon. The gold Toyota Tacoma 2002 pickup truck was taken from the Liliha area at about 2:30 p.m. at the 7-Eleven on Nuuanu and Kuakini streets. A DHL driver found the truck in the parking lot of the First Assembly of God Church on Red Hill. The driver received an e-mail on his phone alerting him of the Maile Alert, the Hawaii version of the Amber Alert. He drove in front of the truck and looked inside. There he saw the 4-month-old girl strapped into her carseat. The baby's mother arrived on the scene and went with the child to the hospital for observation. Police teams are searching the area for the car thief. The child was found with the help of some quick thinking dispatchers at DHL Worldwide Express. Read about the truck driver and dispatcher that helped find the child. They heard a bulletin from the media and decided to send out a message to all 50 DHL delivery trucks on the island. The sharp-eyed driver gave his name only as "Curtis" and declined to talk to the media on camera. Wednesday was the first time police have used the Maile Alert system in an effort to find a missing child here. The system allows the police, through Civil Defense, to take control of broadcast stations to issue an alert. There was some confusion Wednesday. The first alert that went out had the right words on the television screens, but the audio was a weather report. A few minutes later, police broadcast both words on the screen and audio asking people to look for the stolen car. The state Department of Transportation had prepared a message for the large highway warning signs, but the child was found before that was necessary. www.thehawaiichannel.com/news/4641585/detail.html?subid=22100441&qs=1;bp=t

HONOLULU -- Big Island authorities are on a manhunt for two inmates who made their escape from the Hawaii Community Correctional Center in Hilo with bed sheets. Authorities sent out a warning about the two men on the loose and considered dangerous. Hilo police are looking for Kyle Keola Quilausing, 31, and Ludivico Lazo, 35. Just before midnight Tuesday, the two men made their getaway by tying bed sheets together to climb 18 feet to the top of the Punahele Recreation Complex, public safety officials said. Then the inmates broke a window and jumped off the roof to an unfenced area, officials said. A security guard saw the two running through a church parking lot to Waianuenue Avenue. Guards immediately locked down the facility and launched a search. It's possible one of the men is injured, officials said. "From the pictures that we just reviewed when they broke the window and climbed out there was blood on the wall," Department of Public Safety spokesman Mike Gaede said. Quilausing and Lazo were being housed in the recreation complex due to overcrowding issues at the Hawaii Community Correctional Center. Quilausing's Description: Height: 5 feet 8 inches tall Weight: 145 pounds Hair: short, black Eyes: brown Quilausing was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and dark colored pants. He was serving time for auto theft, probation revocation and contempt of court. Lazo's Description: Height: 5 feet 7 inches tall Weight: 140 pounds Hair: black Eyes: brown Lazo was last seeing wearing a white T-shirt and dark colored shorts. Lazo was in jail on drug charges. "Any inmate who has escaped from one of our facilities should be considered dangerous and the public should not approach them. Leave that up to the police," Gaede said. Both men have relatives on the Big Island. Police ask that anyone with information on the whereabouts of either of the men call Hilo police at 961-2213, or CrimeStoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. www.thehawaiichannel.com/news/4641878/detail.html
