PROVO, Utah (AP) -- A young woman who had been exploring a cave with friends was found dead in an underground pool Thursday and three other people were missing, authorities said.
The body was found in a narrow section of the cave leading to an underwater entrance to another chamber, police spokeswoman Karen Mayne said.
The fate of the other three people was unknown, she said.
"We're assuming they're on the other side of the (underwater) opening," she said.
Police were trying to positively identify the woman and notify relatives, she said.
A man with them told police that his friends, ages 18 to 28, entered the water to get to the underwater entrance to another chamber in the cave. When they did not return after about an hour, he called authorities.
Emergency crews were pumping oxygen into the cave and pumping water out. A rescue team from the city of Orem that specializes in working in confined spaces such as caves was on the scene, Mayne said. Crews were unfamiliar with the cave and its layout, she said.
No details about the young adults were released.
Provo is 45 miles south of Salt Lake City.
