I was at a family supper last night at my boyfriends parents' house. The topic of the hurricane came up and one person made the comment "boo hoo those people in New Orleans". Needless to say that comment really lit my fire. Now there are some people on this board that know how I get when my fire is lit. But I did not say anything except, "you know, my family has cousins that we still have not heard anything from there in New Orleans". The topic was dropped like a hot potato.
Back in '89 I was living in Charleston South Carolina. Hurricane Hugo was bearing its ugly head. Everything was destroyed. Now I know it does not even come close to Katrina, but I still know a bit of what these people are going through.
During the time of Hugo, I chose to put on my combat boots from my ROTC uniform and go out with some nurses to deliver food, water, batteries, and various other supplies to the people living out in the remote areas. I'll never forget the look of thanks, the tears, the many "God bless" yous that we received. It still brings tears to my eyes. I lost my job because the grocery store i worked in wanted me to come in and lead people around with a flashlight so they could buy canned goods and I felt that me going out and giving what I could to people that couldn't get anywhere was more important.
I sit here and see everything going on down there and it breaks my heart. I would love nothing more than to go there and do the same that I did so many years ago. But I can't. The only thing I can do if offer my prayers for each and every one of those people that have lost everything they have worked so hard for in their lives. Pray for the ones that have lost loved ones during and after the hurricane. And pray for the ones that died alone, scared, and hungry.
It breaks my heart to see the things on television. To see that some people are taking advantage of the situation to do their evil deeds such as raping the young.
We have not forgotten about these people that so much has happened to. There was not a time when society as a whole did not want to help them. And Lord knows, I would give everything I have right now to help.
Keep faith in God and all will recover. Keep kindness in your hearts. Love each other and pull together.
I just wanted to share this with you all. You're my outlet.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Be safe and love each other.
