HOBBS POLICE DEPARTMENT
Unsolved Homicide
Thomas Lee Logan - August 2, 1974
The following is a brief synopsis of an outstanding homicide case which remains unsolved at this time (10-2004)
On August 2, 1974 at about 7:05 pm, Thomas Lee Logan was fatally shot near the intersection of Dunnam and McKinley. Witnesses described seeing Logan walking alone when he sat down on the curb at the above intersection and then fell over backward. When the first responders arrived, they found Logan had died of a single gunshot wound to the right shoulder. A single .22 long rifle projectile was removed from the decedent during the autopsy.
Witnesses provided a timeline for Logan on the night he was killed. He was seen at the Reno Bar in the company of Steve Rodriguez before he and Rodriguez were evicted from the establishment. Two patrol officers observed him walking alone on Dunnam roughly twenty minutes before his death. Two individuals who had also been drinking with the victim earlier, Ed Cave and Donald Gill, left town abruptly after Logan was killed. They were apprehended in Brownfield, Texas at about 11:30 pm and detained. During questioning, Cave advised that they were headed to Omaha, Nebraska where his brother lived. Gill gave a contradictory statement and advised they were headed to an unknown town in Louisiana.
Neither subject was arrested that night and they were allowed to leave Brownfield. A warrant was issued for Cave and he was arrested on May 11, 1975 when he returned to Hobbs. He submitted to a polygraph that was conducted by an examiner in Odessa, Texas. The examiner opined that Cave had not committed the murder. Charges against Cave were dismissed by the District Attorney's Office on May 21, 1975. Since that time, no additional evidence has been developed that would further implicate Cave or lead to the identification or apprehension of the person or persons responsible for this murder. Any assistance given in this case would be greatly appreciated.
If you have information about this homicide, please contact the Criminal Investigation Division of the Hobbs Police Department at (505) 397-9275, Violent Crimes Hotline at (505) 393-0001, or call your local law enforcement agency.

Unsolved Homicide
Tracy L. Clay - 9/6/1997
The following is a brief synopsis of an outstanding homicide case which remains unsolved at this time (02-1998)
At 7:56 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, 1997, officers of the Hobbs Police Department responded to a drive-by shooting at 1916 East Bond in Hobbs. Officers found the body of Tracy L. Clay (black male, date of birth 03-30-78) of Hobbs lying next to a purple Chevrolet pickup truck which was parked in the driveway of this residence. The victim suffered gunshot wounds to the head and arm and died at the scene.
Upon investigation, it was learned that Clay had been a lifelong resident of our city and was well liked by his peers. Clay and three of his friends had just arrived at this residence, and two of the friends walked into the house. Clay and another friend were still standing in the front yard near the pickup.
Witnesses at the scene stated that a red or maroon mid-1980's Nissan style pickup with an extended cab slowly drove west in front of the residence. As it was directly in front of the home, the suspect (front passenger) fired at least five rounds from an unknown brand .380 caliber pistol. Two bullets struck the victim and the other three struck the parked purple pickup by which Clay was standing.
The suspect vehicle was occupied by at least two unidentified black males. The suspect shooter was described only as having shoulder length hair and the driver was unidentifiable other than being a black male in his mid to late 20's. The suspect vehicle never stopped but proceeded west on Bond Street, pausing at the stop sign at the intersection of Bond and Eastern. It then turned south on Eastern and has not been seen since.
