HALIFAX -- Crown prosecutors in Nova Scotia will seek jail time for a mother convicted yesterday of firing a shotgun as police officers attempted to take custody of her infant daughter.
The case stemmed from a tense, 67-hour standoff last May, when the woman and her husband barricaded themselves inside a Halifax home along with the husband's ailing mother and the couple's five-month-old baby.
After the shot was fired, whistling by the head of a police officer, the neighbourhood was cordoned off and days of negotiations began. The standoff ended May 21, 2004, when the couple emerged carrying the lifeless body of the older woman, who died of natural causes.
