RICHMOND, Virginia (CNN) -- Police on Thursday were searching for a man wanted in three possibly racially motivated shooting deaths in Richmond, Virginia, authorities said.
The shootings occurred Wednesday night within a few minutes and a few miles of each other, said Cynthia Price of the Richmond police.
The first victim, a black male, was robbed and then shot dead on a Richmond street around 6:50 p.m., police said.
About 10 minutes later, two men -- one of Middle Eastern heritage and another of Korean -- were shot to death at a neighboring convenience store and dry cleaning shop in a small strip mall, a few miles away from the first killing.
Witnesses at those shootings said the attacker made angry racist statements before opening fire, Price said.
Police deployed helicopters and canine units in their search overnight. Extra officers were on duty at strip centers in southern Richmond.
The suspect is a black male in his early 30s with braids, weighing about 200 pounds. He also has teardrop-shaped tattoos under his eyes.
Authorities released security camera pictures they said showed the suspect.
"We are currently following good leads, and we think we have a good idea who we're looking for," said Capt. Mark Segal. "We still ask the public to view the photos and call in with any tips they may have."
The man was last seen driving a late model, dark-colored Lincoln with a white roof and a temporary license plate.
