DES MOINES, Iowa -- Police are searching for an escaped prisoner who got away from authorities during an all-night standoff at a Des Moines motel.
Authorities called off the all-night standoff at the motel Thursday morning where the man had barricaded himself in one of its rooms.
Police arrived at the motel at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. There were about 50 to 60 police officers outside the Motel 6 at NE 14 Street and Interstate 80 for about seven hours overnight.
Police received a tip Wednesday night that 30-year-old James Patton escaped from the Fort Des Moines Correctional Facility, and he was staying at the Motel 6.
All the motel's guests were evacuated by the Metro STAR tactical team during the standoff. They have since been allowed to return to their rooms.
Police say Patton broke off communication with them. Police then threw pepper spray into the room and went in. Patton was not in the room.
Sgt. Todd Dykstra, a spokesman with the Des Moines Police Department, said the escapee accessed the roof through an attic door in his room.
Patton pried open a roof vent and climbed out onto the roof where he escaped, according to a press release.
Dykstra said they are confident that the escaped prisoner has left the area.
Police said Patton is a black male, 5 feet 9 inches tall and 180 pounds. They said they believe Patton is armed.
Patton is wanted for walking away from the Fort Des Moines work release program in May. He was serving time there for a parole violation stemming from willful injury charges.
