Florida authorities arrested the deputy press secretary for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Tuesday, accusing him of using the Internet to seduce someone he thought was a 14-year-old girl.
Brian J. Doyle, 55, the fourth-ranking official in the Homeland Security public affairs office, was arrested Tuesday night on charges of use of a computer to seduce a child and transmission of harmful material to a minor.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office also served a search warrant at his residence, during which they seized his home computer.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told reporters the department rushed the investigation "so that he would not have any more access, if in fact he did, to sensitive materials."
The sheriff's office alleges in a statement that Doyle had a sexually explicit conversation with a girl whose profile he saw on the Internet on March 14.
However, the girl with whom he was communicating was actually an undercover detective from the Polk County Sheriff's Computer Crimes department.
The statement also alleges that the suspect asked the "girl" to perform a sexual act while thinking of him, and described explicit sexual acts he wished to engage in with her.
According to the sheriff's office, the suspect sent the "girl" several pornographic movie clips.
Authorities also allege that the suspect spoke on the phone with an undercover deputy posing as the teenager and urged her to purchase a web camera to send him graphic images of herself.
"It struck us as really suspicious and we were really concerned because (during) the very first conversation, Bryan Doyle identified himself as the deputy press secretary for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security," Judd said.
"We thought it was probably a ruse, but lo and behold, further investigation led us to believe to know that it was not all, in fact."
Police allege the suspect not only revealed his name and position, but also offered his office and government-issued cellphone numbers.
Judd accused the suspect of attempting to use his senior position to impress the young girl.
Homeland Security press secretary Russ Knocke in Washington said he could not comment on the details of the investigation.
"We take these allegations very seriously, and we will co-operate fully with the ongoing investigation," Knocke said.
Doyle has been booked into Maryland's Montgomery County jail where he is waiting to be extradited to Florida, the sheriff's office said.
He is expected to be placed on administrative leave Wednesday morning.
