UPDATE APRIL 6, 1999 - UNSOLVED CHILD ABDUCTION AND MURDER - FIVE YEAR OLD - BRITTANY LOCKLEAR - HOKE COUNTY, NC $20,000 + REWARD OFFERED It has been over a year since the abduction and murder of five year old Brittany Locklear. Brittany was abducted on the morning of January 7, 1998 as she stood waiting for the school bus to pick her up from her residence on Gainey Road in Hoke County. The following day, after an intensive search by a combination of local, state and federal law enforcement officers assisted by hundreds of volunteers, Brittany's body was located in a drainage ditch next to a farm road, approximately 3 miles from where she had been abducted. An intense, multi-jurisdictional investigation ensued. Investigators from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the Hoke County Sheriff's Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation interviewed hundreds of persons and followed up on hundreds of leads in an attempt to identify the person responsible for Brittany's abduction and murder. Physical evidence from both the abduction site and the body recovery site was sent to the SBI Laboratory for processing. Recently, the SBI formed a task force to continue this investigative effort. Significant strides have been made. Information developed during this investigation is routinely re-evaluated and compared with new information on a daily basis. Analysis of the physical evidence is continuing. The SBI Task Force remains committed to this investigation and confident that this case will be resolved. One on the areas of continuing focus is the description of the vehicle driven by the suspect. After carefully reviewing the information received and re-interviewing the witnesses, investigators believe that the offender was driving a full size pickup truck of unknown color. There is no evidence that the truck had a camper shell as previously reported. While we have received a great deal of support from the public and hundreds of leads have been called in, we are requesting your continued assistance. A criminal investigation is similar to working a puzzle; all the pieces are needed to accurately complete the picture. Many of the pieces are now in the possession of the task force. However, we have reason to believe that there are individuals who have information of value to this investigation that for unknown reasons have not yet come forward. We are making an appeal to those persons now. You may have the missing piece to the puzzle. Even if you think your information is unimportant or that it has already been reported, please call the task force hotline with your information. In furtherance of our investigative efforts, a reward of $20,000 is being offered by Governor Hunt, the SBI, Hoke County and the public. We must all work together to protect our community. The only way we can do that is to remove the ongoing threat and prevent this from happening to another innocent child. Please contact the SBI Brittany Locklear Task Force or the SBI Operations Center at the following numbers. All leads will be handled in a discreet and confidential manner.

Unsolved Homicide - Cleveland County - Charles Alvin Porter, Jr.
On Sunday morning, Sept. 26, 1993, Charles Alvin Porter, Jr., who worked for the State of North Carolina Dept. of Transportation as a rest area attendant, had gone to work at the I-85 southbound rest area, south of Kings Mountain, N.C. in Cleveland County.
A female attendant was also on duty and was inside the female bathroom cleaning, when she heard what sounded like gunshots from outside the building at approximately. 8:20 A.M.
As the female attendant came outside the building, she observed two black males, leaving from an area behind the building headed towards a car in the parking lot. The vehicle was described as similar to the body style of a Volkswagen Jetta, either dark grey or black in color. The vehicle was backed in a parking space and no license plates were observed.
The female attendant went to a utility room located on the backside of the building, and inside found the body of Charles Alvin Porter, Jr. Mr. Porter had been shot.
We are still trying to find a woman and two children who were in the rest area on the morning of 9/26/93 who may have seen the suspects leaving the rest area and who reportedly told another witness that she had seen the same vehicle and suspects at another rest area somewhere on I-85 earlier in the day.
